The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, "No one spends in charity from lawfully earned money—and God accepts only what is lawful (1)— except that The All-Merciful takes it with His right [hand] (2), even if it were [as small as] a date. It grows in the palm of The All-Merciful until it becomes greater than a mountain; just as one of you rears his colt or his bull calf (3)." Footnotes: (1) i.e. permissible (as defined by God) (2) A metaphor indicating God's acceptance of this charity. (3) The Arabic word used here means specifically a young, weaned, male camel.
